The loneliness of giant clams

The loneliness of giant clams

At the bottom of the endless ocean
far deep down in the deepest blue
I am the giantest clam shell
the ocean ever did knew.

I like to stay deep down here
amongst my greeny weed,
sheltered from your fishing men
with their endless greed.

But even if they found me
and tried to pry apart my lips
I’d let them just a little
to grab them by their hips.

Up and upwards rise their bubbles
toward that strange bright light
and if it weren’t from drowning
they’d die from bloody fright!

I’m down here in my quiet
day, after day, after day.
But my parents and my cousins
were found and dragged away.

They’re dried up in your stores now
and some rest in museums,
because that’s the primary place
where humans go to see ‘em.
